Tooth Extraction

Overview

If your tooth has been broken or damaged from decay, general and cosmetic dentist Dr. Frederick Solomon will make every effort to repair it with a crown, dental bonding, or filling. Nevertheless, sometimes a tooth is just too damaged and it must be pulled. This may also be necessary for a very loose tooth if it can’t be saved with a bone graft or if the patient has too many teeth to fit in their mouth. These teeth, such as impacted wisdom teeth, can block others from coming in, or perhaps baby teeth might not have fallen out and are blocking other teeth. And if you are getting braces or considering Invisalign, you may need a tooth pulled to make room for others to move into its place.

Whatever the reason is for a tooth extraction at Tribeca Smiles in New York, NY, Dr. Solomon will treat you with the care you deserve. We also offer nitrous oxide and oral-conscious dentistry for patients who may feel nervous or afraid to have procedures performed. Let us help get your tooth or teeth out and on your way to a healthy smile.

Surgical Extraction

Sometimes a tooth may not be appropriate to be "pulled out" by your dentist. A surgical extraction, which is a more in-depth procedure that requires anesthesia, is generally used as a last resort. For example, if a tooth is broken at the gum line or will not erupt on its own, you may need a surgical extraction. This will require an incision into the gums to extract the tooth.

Wisdom Teeth Surgery

Here at Tribeca Smiles, we provide top-level extractions for wisdom teeth. Our local anesthetic options put our patients at ease while we work to remove wisdom teeth that are causing you pain and irritation. A general anesthetic prevents pain in the whole body and will cause you to sleep through the procedure. It is recommended that you don’t eat or drink after midnight before surgery so that you are prepared for the anesthetic. Wisdom tooth surgical extractions require us to open up the gum tissue over the tooth and take out any bone that is covering the tooth. We then separate the tissue connecting the tooth to the bone and then remove the tooth.

Best Candidates

The main goal at Tribeca Smiles is to preserve the health and well-being of your teeth, and to stop infections and dental complications before they arise so we can restore healthy functioning to your teeth. It’s our mission to preserve your teeth’s structure. However, this goal can’t always be accomplished with your natural teeth. In such cases, tooth extractions to pull the damaged tooth may be necessary to stop further infection and to save the structure and health of the remaining teeth. Candidates for extraction are those suffering from dental issues such as severe decay, looseness, a trauma, a "dead" tooth, impacted wisdom teeth, etc. Ideal candidates, especially for more extensive oral surgery, are those in generally good health.

  • What to Expect

Dr. Solomon may prescribe antibiotics to be taken before and after the procedure, depending on the situation. This may be called for if you have a current infection, your immune system is weak, the procedure will be extended, or if you have other specific medical conditions. You will be advised not to eat or drink anything for up to 12 hours before the process starts. If you have a cough or cold for up to a week beforehand, let us know and you may be advised to wait until you are in the clear. Anesthesia can run from general, intravenous sedation to conscious sedation to local anesthesia, depending on your wishes and conditions. We will require you to have someone take you home after the procedure.

  • Follow-Up

Your recovery process will vary depending on the complexity of your extraction. Drink lots of water. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, carbonation, or hot drinks. Eat very soft foods for the first 24 hours. In regard to side effects, some blood may ooze and try to form a clot, which is a good thing. Try not to spit it out too much since it promotes healing. You can also replace gauze over the site as directed by Dr. Solomon. Pain management may also be an issue. Depending on the severity, you might find relief with over-the-counter medications or you may need a prescription from Dr. Solomon for something stronger. If the bone was removed, this will be even more important. Swelling and bruising may result from your procedure too. A cold compress will help the swelling. Bruising will take a few more days to subside.
