Accidents happen, and sometimes your teeth are in the line of fire. But before they are, it’s helpful to know in advance what to look out for and what sort of emergencies are time dependent on getting help. Being forewarned and prepared will also prevent you from making needless trips to the dentist, especially during off-hours, since some situations can't wait until regular hours. Some typical types of oral injuries are cracked, broken, or knocked-out teeth. Incidents can result from biting too hard on food, chewing food that’s too tough for your teeth to handle, a mishap while playing sports, a bad fall, or blunt-force injuries. Other types of emergencies can provoke tooth pain besides a cracked or missing tooth. These could be from an abscess or any other number of infections.
New York, NY general and cosmetic dentist Dr. Frederick Solomon will always make your dental emergency a priority and get control of the situation before it becomes worse. Standard protocol usually defines an emergency as bleeding from the mouth, severe pain, loose teeth, being hit in the face or mouth, facial swelling, or bulging in your gums. When calling Tribeca Smiles for your emergency care, be sure to describe exactly what happened and precisely what you are feeling.
If you are playing a sport and break your arm, your first reaction is to seek emergency medical care by going to your local hospital. There, you will receive the prompt and professional treatment you require.
The same is true if you damage or injure your teeth or mouth while playing sports or performing any other activity. Your best recourse is to visit an experienced emergency dentist near you.
One of the most common types of dental emergency is a knocked-out tooth. This can happen while playing contact sports or during a fall. It's a painful injury that requires swift dental treatment services to save the knocked-out tooth.
We recommend that you follow the below steps if one or more of your teeth are knocked out:
There is a greater chance of saving a tooth if you visit an emergency dentist without delay. There is potential for more harm to the affected area with each minute that passes without the proper treatment.
A tooth abscess is caused by a bacterial infection and can be incredibly painful. In the case of an oral infection, pus collects around the teeth, gums, and/or bone that hold the teeth in place. There are several different types of tooth abscesses. These include periapical abscesses and periodontal abscesses.
Common symptoms of a tooth abscess include throbbing, serious pain in the affected tooth or gum, pain that spreads to the jaw, neck, and ear, bad breath, and swollen and shiny gums. Pain may also become heightened when lying down.
There are multiple potential treatment options for a tooth abscess, depending on the exact nature of the issue. These treatments include a root canal, removing the affected tooth through extraction, and incision/drainage of the affected gum.
There are many possible causes for losing a filling, including injuries to the mouth, knocking it loose, and advanced tooth decay. Certain foods, such as hard or sticky foods, may also result in a lost filling.
We understand that you may not be able to get to a dentist immediately to replace the lost filling. As a temporary measure, we recommend sticking a piece of sugarless gum into the cavity. As soon as you are able, you should visit your dentist.
As with a lost filling, you should make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible if you experience a lost crown. While a lost crown is not typically considered an urgent dental emergency, it may be if the jagged edges of your tooth are sharp. There can also be intense pain associated with a chipped or lost crown.
If you are unable to visit your dentist right away, it helps to use a cotton swab to apply clove oil to the sensitive area to deal with the pain
It is estimated that around 4 million people in the United States are wearing braces at any one time, including 25% who are adults.
If you are wearing braces that feature wires or brackets, it is possible that they could break, whether as a result of eating hard foods or as a result of a fall. A loose wire may stick out of a bracket, for example, and poke your gum, tongue, or cheek, causing bleeding and other potential damage.
We recommend that you visit an emergency dentist as soon as possible to make the necessary correction to your braces and treat any injury that has occurred. Delaying fixing your braces after they sustain damage risks delaying the overall length of your dental treatment.

An injury to the soft tissues in the mouth, including the gums, cheeks, lips, and tongue, can result in bleeding. As a way to control the bleeding, we recommend that you rinse your mouth with a mild salt-water solution. Next, play a piece of moistened gauze (or a tea bag) to the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes.
It's recommended that you hold a cold compress to the outside of the cheek or mouth for 5 to 10 minutes to relieve pain. If you cannot stop the bleeding, you should see an emergency dentist without delay.
Losing a tooth is more common than people think, as evidenced by the American Association of Endodontics citing more than five million teeth a year getting knocked out. That’s a lot of teeth, but when it comes to yours, be sure to save it and call Dr. Solomon immediately. Pick up the tooth by the top and don’t touch the roots. Rinse it off very gently (don’t scrub it) and take care not to lose it down the drain. Try to place it back in the socket and hold it in place while gently biting down. If this isn’t going to work, put it in a cup of milk and call us right away for next steps. Be sure to keep our after-hours contact information handy, because 30 minutes can mean the difference between saving or losing the tooth.
Because we are here when you need us. We understand that dental emergencies always happen and can have a major impact. That's why it's so important that you can find effective treatment and emergency dental care without delay.

"Had the absolute best experience with Dr. Solomon, his staff, and his sweet dog Merlin. They took great care of me and helped me make sure my insurance would cover the work I needed done. On top of that, they made me feel so comfortable which is hard to do at a dentist office—it felt like a spa day. I also thought I would have to make a separate appointment to get my chipped tooth fixed but they did it right then and there. I will definitely be back!"

"Dr. Solomon and his team are amazing!! So sweet and helpful, and know what they are doing. They were able to fix my chipped top teeth with bonding super quickly (I even fell asleep while they were doing it) and now am on the road to a perfect smile with Invisalign.
Another plus for me is that they will make the time to see you which with my unusual work schedule is perfect.
Would definitely recommend Dr. Solomon and his wonderful team! I couldn’t be happier with my experience."
