A Complete Guide to Acupuncture

Tribeca Smiles • May 18, 2022

The practice of acupuncture is thousands of years old. While many people have abandoned acupuncture for more "modern" medicine, there's a reason that this practice has survived so long. It works.

Many people are apprehensive about acupuncture. The idea of using needles to heal ailments may trigger some anxiety. We're here with a brief guide all about acupuncture so you can decide if it's right for you.

Read on to learn more.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine. In short, it's the act of penetrating the skin with thin metal needles, but it's more complicated than that.

Acupuncturists focus on specific points throughout the body. These points are all connected, and energy flows through them. That energy is referred to as Qi.

In theory, when something obstructs the flow of energy, that's when people get sick, feel anxious, or otherwise feel unwell. Acupuncturists use needles to reopen and energize those energy pathways.

Who Can Benefit From Acupuncture Services?

Many people use acupuncture to soothe a wide variety of problems. While acupuncture isn't for everyone, it's a great solution if modern western medical practices aren't working for you and you need something unique.

Many people with back and neck pain choose to try acupuncture in combination with standard physical therapy services. It may also benefit people with certain respiratory concerns, headaches, migraines, hormonal concerns, mental health concerns, and more.

At Tribeca Smiles, we use acupuncture for a variety of reasons, but many of our patients like it as a solution for dental anxiety. Up to 80% of people struggle with dental anxiety, and if acupuncture can help them, it can allow them to maintain great dental health.

What Does the Acupuncture Process Look Like?

At Tribeca Smiles, your acupuncture journey will begin with a consultation. The acupuncturist will assess your goals and determine whether or not you're a good candidate for acupuncture at all.

They'll observe your pulse from three different locations and evaluate the appearance of your skin and tongue.

During the actual session, you'll relax while the acupuncturist carefully places needles in the appropriate spot for your diagnosis. This can take around an hour.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

This is one of the biggest concerns people have about acupuncture! Does it hurt?

Acupuncture doesn't feel like getting injections. The needles are as thin as hairs, so while you may feel them, they shouldn't hurt. If you're sensitive, you may feel some discomfort, but most people report a tingling sensation.

It's not uncommon for people to fall asleep during an acupuncture session.

After your session, you may experience minor soreness, redness, or light bleeding, but the pain is uncommon.

Is Acupuncture Right for You?

Acupuncture might be considered "alternative" medicine, but people have been using it for thousands of years to soothe a variety of ailments. Try acupuncture for yourself for anxiety, pain, illness, and more - you may be surprised by the results.
